Three saved from blazing trawler

Fri Dec 13 13:55:42 CET 2019 Timsen

On Dec 12, 2019, at 11.36 a.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the ‘RI 433 – Emmalie‘, 234 gt (IMO: 5381291), north of Hanstholm and westlich of Hirshals at the edge of the Skagerrak. The crew of three saved themselves onto the bow as the wheelhouse was well alight soon after. At 1 p.m. they were safely hoisted aboard the rescue helicopter EH1010 and transported to Aalborg, where they were checked in hospital as a precaution. The SAR boat ‘Claudi‘ from Hanstholm and the fishery protection vessel ‘Vestkysten‘ (IMO: 8516885) attended to try to fight the fire. At 6.20 p.m. the Danish tug ‘Odin‘ (IMO: 8703995) sailed from Hanstholm towards the casualty which remained adrift on Dec 13. The "Vestkysten' along with the 'CB Claudi' and two other fishing vessels managed to douse the blaze with fire cannons and returned to Hirtshals. The 'Emmalie' was adrift 35 miles northwest of Hirtshals and was just waiting to be towed to port, but there was bad weather in the area. There was too much swell for a tug of the Hanstholm Bugserservice to get out to the ship. It was thus not yet known to which port the trawler will be towed to. This will only become clear once salvors of the Hanstholm Bugserservice have been aboard the trawler and it is ready to tow. The wreck was close to Hanstholm as to Hirtshals in its position.
