Pusher tug sank after fire
On Apr 5, 2014, the "Dunaföldvár", 624 ts, caught fire on the Danube - Black Sea Canal at km 29.5 being underway with a convoy of six barges loaded with iron ore to Cernavodă and was near Poarta Albă/Midia. The ship was also carrying 90 tonnes of fuel. After the fire started in the engine room possibly due to a short circuit, the master managed to pull the vessel and barges to shore. The crew of five Hungarians and two Romanians was able to escape uninjured. The rescue center in Dobrogea deployed four fire engines and a fire boat from Medgidia. The fire fighters were able to douse the flames after about five hours, but the fire flared up again due to strong winds on Apr 6 at 6 a.m., and due to the amount of water inside the pusher finally sank after a battle of 12 hours. Only the wheelhouse remained above water. Crews were sent to contain possible fuel spills, traffic was hampered. From Galati a barge was dispatched to raise the wreck within the forthcoming days. The six barges with iron ore were transported further to Cernavodă with a shipof ACN and from there further to the destination Dunăre.
