Patrol boat rescued crew of blazing yacht
On June 20, 2024, the 'CP 892' was mobilized to the 22-metre yacht 'La Corsa', which had caught fire on the afternoon en route from Giglio to Elba, and sank at a water depth of about 200 meters, about 10 miles south-east of the island of Elba. The patrol boat was on site at around 1.30 p.m., following the request for assistance received from the MRCC in Portoferraio. Due to the sudden fire that broke out in the engine room, the vessel broke down and was soon engulfed in flames, forcing the captain and the other two people on board, the Forza Italia senator Stefania Craxi and her husband, the entrepreneur Marco Bassetti, to abandon the yacht afte rattempts to put the fire out with extinguihshers. The 'CP 892' from Portoferraio rescued the three castaways from a liferaft. They were subsequently disembarked in the port of Marina di Campo for checks by health workers. Various units were diverted to the area, under the coordination of the Maritime Directorate of Livorno, including a Navy ship and a helicopter from the Sarzana Coast Guard air base, which intervened following the sinking to monitor any pollution.
