Fire during repair of collision damage
During repair work at the H. Poppen shipyard in Zwartsluis a fire broke out on the "Cosmopolite", 1465 ts (EU-No.: 02315182) on Mar 21, 2016. Workers made an attempt to extinguish the fire, but had to abort this because of heavy smoke. Fire departments from Zwartsluis and Hasselt were quickly on the spot and tackled the fire with hoses and a high pressure foam jet. They gained control on the fire which was in the vicinity of the engine room and the cabins. The ship was repaired at the shipyard since having been involved in a head-on collision on the Markermeer on Mar 15 in the fairway between Lelystad and Amsterdamoff Almere. The impact had been so strong that the skipper was thrown through the window of the wheelhouse and had to be taken to hospital with severe injuries. Both involved ships were towed to the Oranje lock in Amsterdam after the accident. The "Cosmopolite" had been severely damaged, and part of the hull had to be replaced. In order to fight the fire properly, the firefighters had to demolish a part of the bow.
