Ship sank after explosion and water ingress
On Sep 26, 2015, at 3 a.m. the "Campolibre Alai" suffered an explosion, followed by a fire in the engine room in the Somalia Basin. The crew activated the automatic extinguishing system, but upon entering the engine room found a leak inside. They decided to abandon ship, which remained afloat and was drifting, partially submerged with its stern down, in the vicinity of 00 36N 057 08E, 260 miles north of Seychelles until sinking at midnight on a water depth of 2000 meters in the Indian Ocean. The 35 castaways, among them are several Basque and Galician, were assisted by the "Playa Anzoras" (IMO: 9176917) and around 2 a.m. and then transferred onto the "Alakrana" of the same company. They were taken to Victoria and accomodated in hotels, waiting to be repatriated. The Galician oiler Galician Morrazo, who, at the time of the incident. was on duty in the engine room suffered serious burns on his arms, legs and face. Once ashore, the wounded sailor was immediately admitted to the Spanish Seychelles Medical Center, where an initial assessment of the wounds was carried out. In the absence of a burn unit, he was to be transferred to Réunion Island, Dubai or Spain. Echebastar Fleet for months had formalized the sale of the ship, and had even received an advance deposit by a group of Korean interests. At the time of the accident, two inspectors of the company already sailed on board, and it was planned to make the delivery of the freezer between the 26th and 28th October.
