Sailor dies on board bulkcarrier "Albert Oldendorff" in Port of Oakland

Tue Nov 19 09:19:20 CET 2013 arnekiel

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the death of a sailor Monday afternoon on board a ship at the Port of Oakland. Coast guard officials tell KTVU they are waiting for the coroner's autopsy to determine whether the sailor died as a result of an industrial accident or from a medical condition. Oakland emergency crews say they were called to the Port about 2:30 Monday afternoon (Nov. 18). They pulled a ladder truck up to the side of a ship that was docked at Schnitzer Steel at 1101 Embarcadero West. A crew member on board the "Albert Oldondorff" ship had been working on one of the ship's cranes about 30 feet in the air. Oakland Fire Battallion Chief Coy Justice told KTVU that when fire crews arrived the man was lying on his back on one of the crane's platforms.
