Zim ship first to pass under raised bridge at NY-NJ port
A 10,000-TEU Zim Integrated Shipping Services vessel on June 26 will be the first big ship to pass under the newly-raised Bayonne Bridge in the Port of New York and New Jersey, the start of a trail of mega-ships that could help the port regain its lost share of the Asian import market. The early evening arrival of the Zim Antwerp, heading under the bridge for Maher Terminals, will open a new era at the East Coast’s largest port in which ships of up to 18,000 TEU will for the first time be able to visit three of the port’s four main terminals — Maher Terminals, APM Terminals and Port Newark Container Terminal. To reach them, ships have to pass under the bridge, and — until it was raised — the bridge height of 151 feet was too low to accommodate ships of more than 9,800 TEU, which could only stop at GCT Bayonne. While ships of slightly larger than 10,000 TEU have stopped at GCT Bayonne, the Zim Antwerp will be the the first ship to pass under the elevated bridge that would have been unable to do so at the old height. http://www.joc.com/port-news/us-ports/port-new-york-and-new-jersey/zim-ship-first-pass-under-raised-bridge-ny-nj-port_20170615.html
Zim to deploy 10,000 TEU vessels on AEX-1 loop as AEX-2 is suspended
ZIM is to shift three of its 10,000 TEU ships from the end of June to CSCL's AEX-1 service, which it currently participates on as a slot buyer, alongside CMA CGM, Cosco and Yang Ming. Zim is to introduce the 10,062-TEU Tianjin, Zim Antwerp and Zim Rotterdam to the service, replacing three of the nine CSCL ships of 8,500 TEU currently deployed on the service, according to Alphaliner. The company's three ships will be shifted from the CES 2/AEX-2 service jointly operated by Evergreen, CSCL and Zim, which will be suspended from mid-June. A fourth 10,062-TEU ship, the Zim Djibouti, is to join the FE-USWC PNX service. Two of these units, Tianjin and Zim Rotterdam, are to be redelivered to Zim in June at the expiry of a three-year charter by Evergreen. A call at Antwerp is to be added on the AEX-1 to ensure a continuation of the direct call so far offered on the CES 2/AEX-2 service. The first Antwerp call is planned on July 16 on the sailing leaving Shanghai on June 12. Nansha will also replace Hong Kong as Pearl River area call on the way back from Europe to China.
