Container ship assisted in rescue of distressed skipper

Wed Jan 03 10:13:06 CET 2018 Timsen

On Jan 2, 2018, at 7:43 p.m., the "Pictor J.", enroute from Agadir to Bremerhaven and sailing in the ascending lane of the Traffic Separation Zone of the Casquets, received a distress call from a sailboat requesting assistance. The merchant ship immediately notified the CROSS Jobourg. Despite their attempts, neither the CROSS nor the "Pictor J." could reach the boat by radio. As a result, the CROSS asked the merchant ship to head towards the boat's position to serve as a radio relay. The CROSS Jobourg deployed a Caiman helicopter of the French Navy base in Maupertus to assist the sailboat. The "Pictor J." sheltered the sailboat from the wind after its arrival. On scene were adverse weather conditions with wave heights greater than seven meters and a westerly wind of 50 knots which rendered the rescue operation dangerous. The Cayman dropped off his diver to the water in order to save the skipper. After remaining nearly 35 minutes in the water, the diver and the skipper could be hoisted despite very strong winds. At 10 p.m. the skipper, shocked and in a state of moderate to severe hypothermia, was supported by firefighters of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service at the port of Cherbourg before he was transported to the hospital of Cherbourg. The sailboat with its torn sails in the water, began to drift eastward south of the Casquets. An Urgent Notice to Navigators (AVURNAV) has been issued by the Maritime Prefecture of the English Channel and the North Sea to warn mariners of the risk to navigation caused by the sailboat's drift. Despite several attempts, the CROSS has not yet managed to relocate it. Westerly winds of up to 75 km/h were expected on Jan 3, with gusts of up to 95 km/h. The tidal coefficients will peak at 107 during the night to Jan 4.
