Captain heavily fined for sailing with heavy fuel

Fri Jan 18 10:38:35 CET 2019 Timsen

A high security deposit of 30,000 Euros was imposed by the prosecutor in Oldenburg against the Turkish captain of the "SSI Pride" in Brake. The 40-year-old man was accused of an environmental violation in the German territorial waters. The Brake marine police found that the ship was fueled by heavy fuel oil which constituted a violation of international agreements. The captain of the ship had already announced on Jan 10, 2019, that he no longer had enough compliant marine fuel. The freighter had arrived with 45,000 tons of cargo from Varna at Brake. According to the original sailing plan, the ship was due to reach the port on Jan 7. During the voyage, the captain was informed by the port operator that the berth for the freighter would be available only on Jan 16 and advised him to anchor in the North Sea. Due to the bad weather conditions, the captain then decided to raise the anchor and take off. For this reason, the marine fuel that conforms to international regulations has been largely used up. In the further course of the journey, the ship sailed with non-compliant heavy fuel oil while for reasons of environmental protection, sea going vessels may only sail with low-sulfur fuels in the emission monitored areas. After the ship had berthed in the port of Brake on Jan 17, the investigators of the marine police Brake launched an investigation on board. The captain confirmed that the ship had been operated with heavy fuel oil until the entry into the port of Brake. Fuel samples taken by the investigating officers in the engine room of the vessel confirmed this information. The bulkcarrier left the port again on Jan 21 at 8 p.m. The vessel moored on the deep water anchorage on Jan 22 at 2.50 a.m in pos. 54° 1.94' N 007° 28.29' E for orders.
