Grounding off Merak
The 'Safira Nusantara' ran aground at Merak Port on Dec 20, 2020, at 11.50 p.m. when the ship was about to dock at the pier 4, enroute from Bakahueni Port in Lampung. The accident occurred allegedly due to malfunctioning of the lights on the red buoy or buoy lights located not far from Merak Port. Shortly after the grounding, two tugs were deployed to the ship which was more difficult due to strong windsand currents that hit the waters of the Sunda Strait. When the water level also dropped, the salvage was delayed. The ferry was carrying 82 vehicles. On Dec 21 at 8 a.m. the tide started to rise. At 9 a.m. the ship was finally refloated and berthed at Pier 5 of Merak Harbor.
