Dredger abandoned off Fouka

Coast Guard units of the Naval Forces Command intervened after the National Center for Guard and Rescue Operations of the National Coast Guard Service of the Naval Forces Command received a distress signal from the 'Novadragamar' in the morning of Feb 11, 2024, at 7.30 a.m. one nautical mile north of the city of Fouka, Tipaza state, with two crew members of Portuguese nationality and another of Dominican nationality on board. Immediately, and in coordination with the Regional Center for Guard and Rescue Operations at Sea in Algeria in the First Military Region, am SAR operation was activated for the ship’s crew with the SAR helicopter AS-12 as well as the coastal intervention team in Bouharoun. The crew members were rescued and taken to the hospital in Zeralda for medical care. The dredger, which was working for the “Fouka 2” seawater desalination plant project had started to list to port side due to a malfunction in the vessel’s operation during works associated with the project. The project’s advancement was expected to remain unaffected, according to the Algerian Energy Company which clarifyied that the shiphad encountered a stability issue, leading to its sinking. Efforts were underway to assess the damages incurred by the vessel, ensuring the continuation of the project activities.
