Tanker saved German yachties
On Aug 30, 2013, the "Helga Spirit" saved a German couple from the 16-m-ketch "Nada Brahma", 30 ts (built 1973 Hattecke & Son and owned by Dr. Thomas Frank) with hompeport Hamburg in the Atlantic about 650 miles SW of Dakar. They had got in distress in a severe storm, and their ship had torn sails, a failed engine and a broken boom. The couple alerted the MRCC Bremen via satellite phone at 9.30 a.m. reporting their situation. Their ship was drifting eastward amidst the Atlantic. The MRCC contacted their colleagues in Dakar and relayed the emergency call to nearby ships. The "Helga Spirit" which was underway from Rio de Janeiro immediately responded and headed towards the casualty. At 1.30 p.m. the tanker was on scene and took on board the couple. The "Nada Brahma" had to be abandoned. The position was radioed to the MRCC Dakar. After the rescue was finished, the "Helga Spirit" continued on her way to Castellón with an ETA of Sep 7.
