Man fell 25 feet down in reefer hold
In the afternoon of Dec 16, 2019, a man fell 25 ft deep into the refrigerated hold of the 'Wiron 6' in Plymouth. The ship rolling caused the man to fall. He was taken to hospital. The South Western Ambulance Service sent an air ambulance to the scene but was not required. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service also assisted to help rescue the man. One appliance from Greenbank with the specialist rescue team from Camels Head attended. The aerial ladder platform from Crownhill was requested once crews were on scene. Fire crews assisted HEMS crew and paramedics using a stretcher and the ships crane to recover the casualty to land. He was then transported to hospital by ambulance. Fishing vessel detained for high grading
The "Wiron 5" and "Wiron 6" had been escorted to Cork by the patrol boat "LE Samuel Beckett" on Feb 11, 2015, following their detention off the Irish SW coast. The ships were boarded in a Joint Naval Service and Sea Fisheries Protection Authority inspection 30 miles west of the Blasket Islands and were detained for suspected high grading or selective harvesting of fish in Irish waters.
