French frigate shot down one more drone and thwarted hijack attempt

Wed Dec 13 12:06:18 CET 2023 Timsen

During the missile attack on the 'Strinda' in the Bam-el-Mandem Strait, the frigate FREMM 'Languedoc' of the French Navy was patrolling the area and intercepted and destroyed a drone that posed a direct threat to the 'Strinda'. Afterwards, the frigate placed itself in protection of the Strinda and thwarted an attempt to hijack the ship. The fire on board the 'Strinda' was brought under control and no injuries were reported. The USS 'Mason' then escorted the 'Strinda' towards the Gulf of Aden out of the threat zone. The drone strike conducted by the FREMM Languedoc marks another success for the frigate, which only began freedom of navigation patrols in the region on Dec 8. Just over the weekend, the vessel had already shot down two drones approximately 110 kilometers from the Yemeni coast, near Al Hudaydah.

Attacked tanker was on list of ships to call at Ashdod

Wed Dec 13 09:33:12 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Strinda', which was hit by an anti-ship missile near the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the entrance to the Red Sea, was on a list of ships that were on their way to call at the port of Ashdod. According to a now-removed list on the port's website, the tanker was due to call at the port on Jan 4, 2024. The owner of the Norwegian tanker, the J. Ludwig Mowinckels Rederi, had stated in connection with the attack that the ship was on its way to Italy, but not that it would later call at an Israeli port. The Houthi militia, which was behind the attack on the Norwegian tanker, has previously threatened to attack all ships that can be linked to Israel. Maersk ships also appeared on the now-removed list from the Port of Ashdod. Maersk confirmed on Ded 12 that it is diverting ships to avoid them sailing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Both the Danish and Norwegian shipping associations have strongly condemned the attack on the tanker. The Norwegian shipowners were calling for military protection of shipping in the waters.

Tanker hit by missile from Yemen

Tue Dec 12 09:30:59 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Strinda', en route from Tanjung Langsat to Suez, has been hit by an anti-ship missile in international waters in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait off the coast of Yemen on Dec 11 at around 4 p.m. EST. The Yemeni Navy initially had ordered that the vessel alter course to Yemen. The tanker thereupon changed course and tried to sail further west away from the coast of Yemen, when the Houthis launched the Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM) from a Houthi controlled area of Yemen, while the tanker was passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb, about 15 nautical miles west of port of Mokha. The ship was damaged, and a fire broke out on board, but so far no casualties have been reported. There were no US ships in the area at the time of the attack, but the USS 'Mason' responded to the vessel’s mayday call and was rendering assistance. The severity of the fire was unknown.
