Fire on ferry quickly contained
In the afternoon of Oct 31, 2019, a fire broke out in the starboard side engine of the 'Quick Cat' which was underway from Waiheke Island to Auckland City with 97 passengers and five crew members on board. As smoke entered the cabin, they were taken to the outside deck. A boat carrying firefighters rushed to meet the ferry at sea, but the fire had already been put out by the crew by the time the fire crew boarded the vessel. Fire and Emergency NZ personnel scrambled to the ferry terminal in downtown Auckland to await the ferry's arrival. The ferry was forced to make its way to Auckland using one engine and travelling at 7.5 knots, arriving one hour late. Firefighters attended on Pier 2 with hoses at the ready as a precaution. When the ferry docked, three people were checked over by St John paramedics. One person was in a moderate condition but didn't require transport to hospital. Two others didn't require treatment. The patients had suffered from smoke inhalation. Report with video: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12281635
QUICK CAT0302
Two boaties were injured when their launch was cut in two and sucked under the "Qickcat" in a late-night collision off Auckland's eastern suburbs on Sep 11, 2010 short before 9 p.m. . The collision wrecked the 7.5-m launch in rain and rough seas near the Bean Rock lighthouse. The claunch was sucked between the two hulls of the ferry and it was semi-submerged, split in two and upside-down. The two boaties were hauled from the sea and taken to Auckland City Hospital, where they were treated for minor cuts and hypothermia. The ferry was travelling at 20 knots at the time of the incident. It returned to Auckland and transferred passengers on to a later ferry.
