Investigation report on trawler loss published

Fri Jul 17 09:54:22 CEST 2015 Timsen

On July 13, 2015, the Maritime Accident Investigation Board has published its report on the loss of the "Pia Glanz" on June 24, 2014, in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. After having stayed in a raft for a short time, the four crew members were rescued by the Swedish tanker "Fox Luna", which was in the vicinity. The study of the sinking focused partly on the circumstances, which caused the sinking of a well-maintained and relatively new fishing vessel, and partly on the factors that led to the successful evacuation and subsequent rescue of the crew. The report concludef that the unidentified sources of water ingress in the engine room on fishing vessels is a wellknown problem. As the "Pia Glanz" has not been raised after the sinking, it has not been possible to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the source of penetration of water. The report also points to the positive effect of the crew having attended a course in maritime safety for able fishermen six months before. The Maritime Accident Investigation Board has compiled a casualty report with photos in Danish: http://www.dmaib.dk/Ulykkesrapporter/PIA%20GLANZ%20-%20Forlis%20den%2024.%20juni%202014.pdf

Gillnetter sank off Norway

Wed Jun 25 09:53:06 CEST 2014 Timsen

The "Pia Glanz - L 654" foundered 65 miles southwest of Egersund in the afternoon of June 24, 2014. The ship had suffered water ingress in the engine room, and the skipper John Christensen alerted the Danish Navy Operational Command Center which in turn informed the Norwegian MRCC. A Seaking helicopter was dispatched from Stavanger, but the situation aboard the gill netter deteriorated so quickly that the skipper sent his crew of three into the lifeboat while he tried to gain control over the situation. But there was nothing left to do, and short time later he also had to abandon ship. Around 2 p.m. the "Pia Glanz" had sunk in position 57.32 - 04:48.Soon after, the castaways were picked up by the Swedish tanker "Fox Luna" (IMO: 9390458) which had received the emergency broadcast and diverted to the scene where he arrived at the same time as the Norwegian rescue helicopter. They were taken aboard in good shape and transferred aboard the Danish lifeboat "Emile Robin" approx. 30 miles west of the port. On June 25 at 7 a.m. John Christensen and crew met their families on the quay in Hvide Sande, while the tanker continued to Rotterdam.
