German freighter rescued four distressed yachtsmen
On June 17, 2021, the Dufour 500 yacht 'Arruno' got in distress with four people on board in the Atlantic, four days after leaving Canadian en route to the Azores, due to a water ingress. The pumps were keeping the water level under control, but did not get the water out, so the skipper Mike Celis decided to send out a distress signal. The 'Independent Pursuit' immediately responded, being just four miles away on its way from Southampton, UK, to Philadelphia, and diverted to the yacht. The yacht approached the freighter under sail in five to six Beaufort wind 1,5 hours after the emergency situation occurred. After two attempts and minor damage to the mast, the 'Arruno' could be brought alongside, and the crew, besides the Belgian skipper three Canadians, climbed a rope ladder aboard the freighter. The boat was abandoned with the bilge pumps running and the tracking systems, an AIS and an Iridium Go, also remaining on. The master of the 'Independent Pursuit' notified the MRCC and the Canadian Coast Guard in St John's which sent a GMDSS safety message in time with the position of the 'Arruno'. The castaways were dropped off in Philadelphia on July 17. On July 7, the 'Arruno' sent out one last tracking signal via the Iridium Go, then went silent. On July 20, the MRCC Delgada reported that a freighter had spotted the 'Arruno' 20 miles from her last known position with broken mast, but still floating.
