Icebreaker in distress off Ålesund

West of Ålesund the 'Tor' with 33 people on board issued a mayday call on OCt 22, 2019, at 6.36 a.m. The ship had lost engine power in a storm off Ålesund. The MRCC in South Norweay deployed a helicopter from Florø, but by 9 a.m. the ship restored power to two of the four main engine, and the situation was under control so the helicopter was stood down as no evacuation was required. The tugs 'Boa Heimdal' and 'Far Sigma' as well as the 'Bergen' of the Coastguard were on their way to the vessel and expected to be on scene within a couple of hours in order to try to tow the icebreaker inland during the afternoon. After the icebreaker got its engine started again, it continued northwards with own propulsion at 10.15 a.m. As there was no more need for assistance, the HRS Southern Norway ended the rescue operation and thanked all the resources for good assistance. The 'Tor' reached the waters of Ålesund on Oct 23 at 2 a.m. and dropped anchor in pos. 62° 28.85' N 006° 7.39' E.
