Fire still smouldering
After several hours the fire aboard the "Wan Hai 307" was extinguished, but some of the containers were still smoking. The authorities allowed the ship to drop anchor between Cheung Chau and the Lamma islands on Sep 21. The firefighters were monitoring the ship and the smoulder containers were to be offloaded once the fire was completely out.
Container ship on fire
In the afternoon of Sep 19, 2016, a fire broke out in containers loaded in the foreship section of the "Wan Hai 307" south-east of Cheung Chau off Hong Kong. The ship was enroute from Kaohsiung to Hong Kong when it reported the fire to the Hongkong Marine Department. The attempts of the crew to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful. The fire was raging out of control, and at 9 p.m. the vessel anchored west of Lamma island. The channel was closed by the Marine Department for ship traffic with the exception of authorized vessels. Salvage ships and tugs were on the scene, trying to get the fire under control. A firefighting team boarded vessel, but on Sep 20 the fire was still on. Some containers on fire or near the fire contained dangerous goods. The crew of the ship was evacuated.
