Fatal ferry fire still being investigated
The 'Sabuk Nusantara 91' has not yet resumed operations, as local authorities were still investigating the fire that occurred on board. The shipping company stated that it will cover all costs of the medical treatments and provide compensation to the victims. They were cooperating with the investigators and also commended the crew members who acted quickly and were able to extinguish the fire quickly., which was suspected to have been caused by a lit cigarette butt that was disposed of and landed on a mattress.
One passenger dead in ship fire
The 'Nabuk Nusantara 91' caught fire on Masalembu Island, Sumenep Regency, Madura, East Java, on Sep 16, 2022. The ferry docked at the Port of Masalembu at around 06:00 a.m. WIB and was to continue its sea voyage to Keramaian Island at around 07:05 a.m., when smoke suddenly came out of the starbarod side passenger deck 1. It was suspected that the incident was caused by a cigarette butt hitting the passenger mattress on deck 1 which caused a puff of smoke and a fire. The ship was carrying as many as 20 people who were headed to Keramaian Island. One passenger died, three were injured.
