Cruise ship skipped port call after assisting migrant boat
In the night of Oct 9, 2023, the 'Norwegian Breakaway' was called by the Italian Coast Guard to assist a refugee boat in distress. Being the next ship in the region south of mainland Italy, the ÄNorwegian Breakaway' proceeded to the position at around midnight. Together with a cargo ship, the crew of the 'Norwegian Breakaway' investigated the situation and determined that there was no immediate threat to the lives of those on board the unseaworthy boat. The Italian Coast Guard also rushed to rescue the approximately 200 people. After about four hours at the migrant boat's position, the 'Norwegian Breakway' was able to continue its journey. Due to the delay caused by the assistance, the call at Catania had to be skipped. The ship completed an unscheduled day at sea and arrived in Naples as scheduled in the morning of Oct 11.
Passenger medevaced in critical condition
The US Coast Guard medevaced a 64 year-old-female passenger from the 'Norwegian Breakaway' on Dec 4 on the Mississippi River near Venice, Louisiana. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a call at 8:55 p.m. from the cruise ship, requesting a medevac for a passenger who was reportedly in critical condition and in need of immediate medical care. Sector New Orleans watchstanders coordinated the launch of a Coast Guard Station Venice 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew to assist. The boatcrew crew arrived on scene and transferred the passenger to awaiting emergency medical services personnel at Station Venice. The passenger was last reported to be in critical condition.
Cruise ship rescued distressed migrants
On the last day of a five-night sailing, the 'Norwegian Breakaway' assisted and rescued approximately 20 refugees from an overloaded boat in the North Atlantic. The bridge crew saw the boat, contacted the authorities, and brought the people aboard the cruise ship en route from the Port of Cozumel back to Miami, Florida, on Aug 18, 2022, approximately 30 miles west of Cuba. The cruise ship's captain, Andreas Karlstroem, assessed the situation and determined that the refugees could not remain in the small boat, which appeared to be overloaded with 20 or 30 people. One of rescue boats was launched and transferred the castaways aboard, which took approximately 3,5 hours. Once on board, the refugees received food, water and medical care as needed. The US Coast Guard (USCG) was notified of the situation as the rescue was in progress and took care of the refugees later.
