Near miss being investigated

Fri Nov 15 11:30:28 CET 2019 Timsen

After the near-collision of the 'Finnswan' and 'Mergus' (IMO: 8324517), between Korpo and Norrsata on Nov 13 at 12:48 p.m. both Finferries and Finnlines have reported the incident to the authorities and the situation was being investigated. The 'Mergus' was enroute from Norrskata to Korpo when it almost collided with the 'Finnswan' which was enroute from Naantali to Kapellskär and could not go much aside in the narrow fairway. The ships were only ten meters apart. The 'Mergus' did a so-called cow turn, turning a full circle. She had a crew of three and two passengers on board, the 'Finnswan' had 82 passengers and 38 crew members on noard. Both ferries continued their journeys after the near miss. An internal investigation was first conducted with the staff, and an appointment with Finnlines was also arranged. It was not the first time the 'Mergus' has been involved in a such an incident. In a foggy summer night in 1997, the ship collided with the bow of the ferry 'Finnmaid'. Both vessels sustained minor injuries, but no people were injured in that accident.

Near miss in Finnish waters

Wed Nov 13 20:30:39 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'Finnswan' and 'Mergus' had a near miss and where only tens of meters apart between Korpo and Norrsata on Nov 13, 2019, at 12:48 p.m. The 'Mergus' had left Norrska dock and was on its way to Korppoo, having to cross a busy shipping lane on its route which usually takes fifteen minutes. The 'Finnswan' was on its way from Naantali to Kapellskär when suddenly both ships were only 30-40 meters apart. The threat of a collision was avoided as a result of the maneuvers of the two vessels. The 'Mergus' did a so-called cow turn, turning a full circle. She had a crew of three and two passengers on board, the 'Finnswan' had 82 passengers and 38 crew members on noard. Both ferries continued their journeys after the near misses. An internal investigation is first conducted with the staff, and an appointment with Finnlines was also arranged. The 'Mergus' had come from the right and was privileged in this respect.

Nordlink now Finnswan

Mon Feb 05 18:22:36 CET 2018 Timsen

The "Finnswan" (formerly "Nordlink") is due to start on the Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär route. Slotting the "Europalink", purchased last week, to the Malmö–Travemünde route will trigger reshuffling in Finnlines fleet. At the end of April 2018, the "Nordlink" will switch from the Malmö–Travemünde route onto the Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär route. The name of the vessel has changed from "Nordlink" to "Finnswan", on Feb 5, and she sails now under Finnish flag.
