Nanny in trouble near Samson's Island

Mon May 29 21:24:20 CEST 2017 Timsen

An ice escort for the "Nanny" turned into an SAR effort for the Canadian Coast Guard in Notre Dame Bay on May 25. The tanker was attempting to rendezvous with the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker "George Pearkes" to negotiate passage to open waters. But the ship ran into difficultly near Samson’s Island and reached out to the CCG as it almost ran aground on Tickle Island. Conditions in the bay were sever. The ship was disabled earlier this year after sustaining rudder damage as a result of heavy ice in Notre Dame Bay. The Coastal Shipping Limited claimed the ship returned to Lewsiporte solely due to ice conditions after the "Nanny" and the "George Pearkes" were unable to rendezvous. The tanker was to depart again once the "George Pearkes" had negotiated a clear passage to Lewisporte. The company did not offer any explanation for the discrepancy in information, or whether the ship contained any cargo.
