Fire in engine room off Finland
On Nov 7, 2021, at around 2 a.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the 'MSC Shannon', en route from Antwerp to Le Havre with 24 crew members on board and a cargo of more thant 1.200 containes, in the western Gulf of Finland, southwest of Helsinki, in the international waters off Raseborg. The Finnish rescue squadron and the patrol ship 'Turva' (IMO: 9650377), as well as the Maritime Incident Response Group of the Southwest Finland Rescue Department and the City of Helsinki Rescue Department, were alerted to the scene. A naval rescue helicopter made a reconnaissance voyage to the ship. A Dornier surveillance aircraft was also deployed to the scene. Preparations were also made to mobilize the MIRG in Helsinki and Southwest Finland Maritime Incident Response Group groups which were ready to fly to the ship in rescue helicopters. In the afternoon of Nov 7 the ship was at anchor in pos. 59° 42.00' N 023° 38.17' E.
